Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Construction of 2.1 TMC Kikvi Dam.

Proposed Kikvi Dam Project in Nashik
Addressing Nashik's Water Scarcity
The Maharashtra government has given the green light to construct the Kikvi dam in Trimbakeshwar taluka. This project aims to alleviate the drinking water crisis in Nashik city by providing an additional 2.1 TMC of water. The decision comes in response to the declining storage capacity of the Gangapur dam, which has been affected by silt accumulation.
A Solution to Water Shortages
NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced the government's approval, highlighting the importance of the Kikvi dam in meeting the growing water demands of Nashik's expanding population. The project is a strategic move to ensure a reliable water supply for the city, especially considering the significant population growth projected by 2041.
Overcoming Obstacles
The Kikvi dam project has faced several hurdles since its inception in 2009. Environmental concerns and legal challenges delayed its implementation. However, with the recent government approval and necessary land acquisition, construction is expected to commence soon.
Cost and Timeline
The project's estimated cost has increased substantially from its initial estimate of ₹283 crore to ₹1,400 crore. Land acquisition alone is expected to account for a significant portion of the expenses. Despite the challenges, the Kikvi dam project is poised to become a crucial solution to Nashik's water scarcity and contribute to the city's sustainable development.
